Hazard Rescues Chelsea In Six-Goal Roma Thriller

Chelsea’s Hazard….Photo Credit: AFP
Eden Hazard came to Chelsea’s rescue after his side blew a two-goal lead in a dramatic 3-3 draw with Roma in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Antonio Conte’s team looked on course for a comfortable victory at Stamford Bridge thanks to first-half goals from David Luiz and Hazard at Stamford Bridge.

But Roma’s Aleksandar Kolarov struck before half-time to spark a stirring fightback from the Serie A side.

Former Manchester City forward Edin Dzeko bagged a brace after the interval to give Roma the lead, only for Hazard to spare Chelsea’s blushes with a late leveller.

Chelsea remains two points clear of Roma at the top of Group C, but this was the latest in a growing list of alarming displays from the Premier League champions.

Blues boss Antonio Conte reportedly held a lengthy inquest with his squad in the aftermath of Saturday’s shock 2-1 loss at Crystal Palace and this erratic performance — which extended their winless run to three matches — may well spark another dressing down from the Italian.

“It was a difficult game against a good team. We suffered in possession and it wasn’t easy in the first half, despite scoring two goals,” Conte said.

“The change of the system wasn’t good, but when you are in a difficult situation sometimes you have to improvise.”

After being penned into their own half early on, Chelsea conjured an electric counter, but Alvaro Morata, showing signs of rust after his injury lay-off, shot tamely at Roma goalkeeper Alisson.

Roma was undaunted and Diego Perotti galloped forward for a swinging strike that whistled over.

Brazil defender Luiz had been missing in action during that Roma raid, but the part-time midfielder recovered his bearings to put Chelsea ahead in the 11th minute.

Stealing possession inside the Roma half, Luiz initially tried a defence-splitting pass, but when that was blocked, he seized on the rebound and curled a fine first-time finish past Alisson from 20 yards.

Roma midfielder Radja Nainggolan wasted a golden chance to equalise when he shot straight at Thibaut Courtois.

That miss seemed fatal for Roma when Hazard scored Chelsea’s second in the 37th minute.

It was Hazard who started the attack, pouncing in midfield and picking out Morata.

While Morata sized up his options, Hazard was sprinting into the Roma area, where he met his team-mate’s deft cross with a cool close-range finish.

– Warning signs –
Hazard’s first club goal of the season should have put Chelsea on cruise control, but they remained far from convincing and Roma was back in the game three minutes later.

Kolarov took possession wide on the left edge of the Chelsea area, surged past Cesar Azpilicueta and blasted a fierce strike that deflected in off Andreas Christensen.

Roma had won only once in their 15 games in England, but the way they were bossing possession suggested a memorable escape wasn’t out of the question.

The warning signs were there when Courtois was forced to stick out a boot to stop Dzeko converting Kolarov’s cross early in the second half.

Conte responded to Chelsea’s struggles by sending on Pedro for Luiz and moving Cesc Fabregas into a more defensive midfield role.

But the switch failed to stem the tide and Roma equalised thanks to Dzeko’s moment of magic in the 64th minute.

Federico Fazio spotted Dzeko’s run and lofted a perfectly-weighted high pass that dipped into the Bosnian’s path.

Dzeko contorted his body in mid-air to meet the ball with a sublime volley that flashed past Courtois.

Conte’s side was stunned, but Dzeko wasn’t finished yet and he put Roma ahead in the 70th minute.

Kolarov’s inswinging free-kick caught Chelsea flat-footed and Dzeko headed home from close-range.

But, just as Chelsea looked sunk, Hazard bailed them out, ghosting into the Roma area to equalise with a glancing header from Pedro’s 75th-minute cross.

Saudi Arabia Elects Woman To Lead Sports Federation

Princess Rima bint Bandar bin Sultan
A princess has been named to head a Saudi multi-sports federation, in a first for women in the conservative Muslim kingdom where men dominate all sports, an official said Saturday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AFP that Princess Rima bint Bandar bin Sultan has become “the first woman to lead a federation” covering sporting activities for men and women.

In August 2016, the princess scored another first for women in Saudi Arabia when she was named by the cabinet to a senior post in the kingdom’s equivalent of a sports ministry.

A daughter of a former Saudi ambassador to Washington, Prince Bandar bin Sultan, Princess Rima is a graduate in museology from an American university.

Saudi Arabia does not allow women to practise sports in the public sphere and even the introduction of private sports centres for women has aroused criticism among religious conservatives in the Gulf state.

Although the kingdom announced it will lift a ban on women drivers from next June as part of a reform push, it still retains tight restrictions on women and imposes a strict segregation of the sexes.

Under the country’s guardianship system, a male family member — normally the father, husband or brother — must grant permission for a woman’s study, travel and other activities.

Gunman Attacks Dallas Football Watch Party In Texas, About Eight (8) Killed!

A football match at Texas has reportedly gone bloody when about eight people were shot dead on Sunday night when a gunman with multiple weapons barged into his ex-wife's home and went on a shooting spree.

While the match lasted at the single-family home off Spring Creek Parkway in Plano, less than 20 minutes from Dallas, around 8 p.m. when the shooter opened fire inside the party. Two people were wounded, and 7 were killed before authorities arrived and shot the gunman dead.

Authorities responded to the home in the 1700 block of West Spring Creek Parkway, near Custer Road, at 8:04 p.m. after multiple gunshots was reported. An officer heard shots upon arrival. He entered the home and confronted the gunman before fatally shooting him.

The two wounded victims were transported to the hospital where one of them later died. Of the nine shooting victims, only one survived. According to witnesses, a man arrived at the house where a group was watching the Dallas Cowboys vs. New York Giants game. He had an argument with a woman outside before drawing an automatic weapon and opening fire.

"I seen a man argue with a woman. They were standing outside arguing. The woman was trying to go back in and as she was going back in the house you seen the man pull out his gun and starting just releasing. He just started letting them go. It was an automatic. You could hear it go off multiple times, you could hear it just ring off," a witness told a Fox News reporter.

"It sounded like an argument between a woman and a man and it got really loud…next thing you know all you heard was multiple rounds just going off," Crystal Sugg, who works nearby, told Fox 4.

Police said at a news conference on Monday they have not identified all of the victims, but said they were all adult men and women. Debbie Lane, the mother of the woman who lived in the home, said the gunman was her former son-in-law who killed her daughter, Meredith Lane. The mother said the couple recently got divorced after six years of marriage and the man used to own the home where the shooting happened.

"She was a cook, and a quite fine one, and she loved hosting friends and families," Lane told WFAA. "This was her first opportunity to do it after the divorce and he didn’t take it well."

Lane continued: "I really wish we knew who the other victims were. They were all close dear friends. We don’t know".

Algeria’s Coach Backs Nigeria To Defeat Zambia

Lucas Alcarcaz, Algeria’s head coach has said that the Super Eagles will pull through to qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, irrespective of the threat triggered by second placed Zambia as both teams meet next month.

Alcataz, while speaking in an interview with journalists, said Nigeria should qualify, although the Chipolopolo of Zambia would prove to be a hard nut to crack. He feels Rohr’s boys will eventually get the ticket to Russia.

"I know it was an interesting result in Cameroon, which gives hope to other teams, but still the momentum is with Nigeria and they are most likely to overcome Zambia
"Zambia has a balanced squad with a blend of youngsters but I don’t think they can make it for the World Cup in Russia. Zambian coach, Wedson Nyirenda, has a good team but I think he should concentrate on building a strong team, with the focus on qualifying for the 2022 World Cup. I believe the Qatar target is attainable if they can maintain the same performance" he concluded.

Eagles Victory Worthy Sallah Gift To Nigerians – Fans

Football fans in Omu-Aran, Kwara, on Thursday said Super Eagles victory against the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon in the World Cup qualifier on Friday would be a wonderful Sallah gift for Nigeria.

The fans who spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) charged the Super Eagles to put in their best to secure victory in the match.

The fans contended that the match slated to hold at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium Uyo, coincides with the Eid-el-Kabir festival, as such “is a sign of divine luck for the eagles.”

The fans charge the Eagle to utilise the home advantage to secure the maximum three points against their opponent in the spirit of the celebration.

“I will not deceive you we have performed prayers for the Super Eagles to beat the Cameroonians and secure the maximum points.

“The match coinciding with Sallah has even given us the needed morale booster and the Eagles should also use the opportunity to come out victorious which will be our Sallah gift.

Nigeria's D'Tigress Beat Senegal To Win 2017 Afrobasket Championship

After booking the first ticket to the FIBA World Championship, D’Tigress defeated Senegal 65-48 in the final of the 2017 FIBA Women Afrobasket tournament in Mali.

It was their second victory over Senegal, who they had defeated in a group match and marked a glorious outing for Nigeria, who have now won the title thrice.

Nigeria last won the tournament in the 17th edition held in 2005 in Abuja and this latest victory, was greeted with scenes of ecstasy by the players, who wildly jubilated at the sound of the buzzer to end the thrilling finale.

But it almost did not go according to the script after the Nigerians slumped to a first quarter 12-18 defeat to the Senegalese ladies, who burst loose netting three points and holding their foes at bay.

The strong play by the Senegalese forced the Nigerians to reassess their strategy, which paid off as they won the second quarter 21-10.

With the Nigerian ladies on the ascendancy, Senegal were pushed back, which only worked in the favour of the D’Tigress, who took the third quarter 15-7.

With their feet firmly pressed on the gas, D’Tigress capped up a memorable night in Mali, with a dominant performance in the fourth quarter, which they won 17-13, taking their haul for the night to 65-48.

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Defeats Conor McGregor By Technical Knock Out (TKO)

In a result that shocked few, Floyd Mayweather Jr. defeated Conor McGregor by technical knockout before a crowd of 14,623 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday.

McGregor, though, surprised many by going toe to toe with Mayweather until the 10th round.

"He's a lot better than I thought he was," Mayweather said after the bout.

Mayweather's record is now 50-0, surpassing Rocky Marciano, who went 49-0. After Saturday's win, Mayweather said this was the final fight of his career, calling McGregor "a hell of a champion."

"A win is a win, no matter how you get it," Mayweather said. "Rocky Marciano is a legend, and I look forward to going into the Hall of Fame one day."

Two different sports worlds collided into a 12-round junior middleweight boxing match: Mayweather, considered one of the best defensive boxers of all time, coming out of retirement at age 40, his last fight a unanimous decision victory over Andre Berto on September 12, 2015. McGregor, 29, is the current UFC lightweight champion and the most exciting draw in mixed martial arts today -- but it was his first professional boxing match.

Additionally, the lead-up to the bout had a disturbing dark side.

The two fighters embarked on a four-city media tour this summer spanning the United States, Canada and England. Though there were no physical blows at those, Mayweather, who has a record of domestic violence, and McGregor exchanged verbal jabs full of profanity, racism, homophobia and misogyny.

Yet, despite the hatred on full display by both men, fans and celebrities expressed interest in this fight. The stars were out in full force Saturday at T-Mobile Arena, including LeBron James, Mike Tyson, Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, Bruce Willis, Jamie Foxx, Olivia Munn, William H. Macy, Don Cheadle, Jeremy Piven, Nick Cannon and Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne. Earlier this summer, estimates of 10,000 fans attended the media tour in Los Angeles. There were 15,000 in Toronto, 13,000 in New York and another 10,000 in London.

And maybe the thought of McGregor pulling off the unthinkable was a reason why people shelled out $99.95 to watch the fight on pay-per-view in the United States. But not all viewing went smoothly. According to Showtime Sports, there were reports of "scattered outages" from various cable and satellite providers and the online offering. Showtime Sports delayed the start of the main event slightly to allow for systems to get on track. It was a short delay.

But after all that jawing and waiting, did it really matter who won? Both fighters are expected to leave the ring with hefty paydays. According to CNNMoney, industry experts have speculated that the fight could surpass $500 million, which was a record set by the Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao fight in 2015.

Floyd remains world boxing champion!

NPFL: Don’t Put Rangers On Relegation List — Coach Agbo

Enugu Rangers coach, Chukwuma Agbo has laughed off suggestions that his club may be relegation threatened.

Rangers have struggled for most of the season in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) but Agbo insists that rather than think of a relegation dog fight they have bigger dreams.
“When I took over here, they gave me five games to turn the club around and I won three, drew one and lost one. “I do not know why people have always been mentioning relegation with Rangers but I am looking at playing on the continent,” Agbo told npfl.ng.
“I am not losing hope though. We may not get to the continent via the league. We can also do it through the Federation (Aiteo) Cup,” Agbo enthused.

In spite of Rangers’ struggles for most of the season, Agbo had never been downbeat and he gave his reasons for this.
“You see, as a leader, if you drop your head, it will discourage others. Even in a bad situation I need to rally the troops. The slogan of Rangers is ‘never say die’ and that is what we believe at Rangers that we will never die,” Agbo said.
With three matchdays left to play, Rangers lie in 10th place with 49 points and need four more points to be certain of playing in the top flight next season.

Roberto Carlos Faces Jail Time

Former Real Madrid full-back Roberto Carlos is facing a jail sentence in his native Brazil over unpaid alimony fees, according to reports. Marca states the legendary left-back owes 61k reals (€16.5k) to his ex-partner Barbara Thurler with an ongoing court case in Rio De Janiero.

The report cites media reports in Brazil which state the former Brazil international, currently an ambassador for Madrid, is claiming financial problems for the delay in payments.

Prosecutors are asking for the two-time World Cup winner to face jail time of three months due to the delay, which is in relation to two of his children.

Carlos’s current wife Mariana Lucon has recently given birth to his ninth child, while fellow 2002 World Cup winner has previously been sent to jail twice for failure to meet alimony deadlines.

The 44-year-old made over 500 appearances for Los Blancos between 1996 and 2007, winning four La Liga titles and three Champions Leagues.

Enyeama Set To Returning To The National Team – Super Eagles Coach, Gernot Rohr

Vincent Enyeama
Gernot Rohr, Head Coach of the Super of Eagles of Nigeria, has revealed that goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama will return to the national team once he is fully fit.

In 2015, Enyeama who presently has been axed by his club in France, Lille, announced his retirement from the national team, a day after he was officially stri*ped of the captain’s armband for the Super Eagles.

He reportedly had an altercation with former Coach of the Super Eagles, Sunday Oliseh, and took to his Instagram page to announce that he is no longer available for national team duties and would henceforth face his club career.

He wrote, “I have fought a good fight for more than 13years.I have finished my course, I have kept the faith and sang the anthem with passion. henceforth, there is laid for me a crown which only GOD can reward me for my 13years of national services. God bless NIgeria.

“Henceforth, I am no more the captain of the NIgerian senior football team, I am no more the goalie of the team. I am out of the team. I am no more available for international duties.

But in a recent interview with Owngoalnigeria.com, Coach Rohr revealed that once Enyeama returns to full fitness and also sort out the issues of finding a new club, he is confident he will return to the team.

“The true position is that I have a good relationship with Enyeama and he has a problem with the federation (NFF) before I came on board as coach. When I called him and he said there’s a problem with the federation, I cannot come at the moment,” Rohr stated.

“When I call him again, he asked to take some leave for his injury. I think the situation is a little bit different because some players who don’t want to play for their national team can change their mind.

“But unfortunately the injury of Vincent means he cannot come for this game against Cameroon, not only that he also has to find another club because his club bought two other goalkeepers. “So he cannot play at the moment at his club, he must be fit first and also find another club then hopefully he will be motivated to come back to the national team.”

...hopefully.
